Sean we need to get you to a stock image and then unroot and lock your device. That will pretty much wipe your sd partition and all it's contents. I suggest you back up any pics, data etc that is important. Give me a few mins.
Before you flash anything can you get back to stock? How to get back to stock using Odin
Have you backed up your files and pictures? I see too many desperate cries for help recovering deleted priceless pictures with no solution.
Need to hard reset? How to Hard Reset-Factory Data Reset.

Before moving on can you try one more time settings>storage>menu>MTP. Go ahead and check the other PTP. power down and reboot your phone. Try plugging your device to pc. Change back to MTP and reboot again.

I'm afraid still not recognised after 2 reboots on each setting

Hold on everyone! I just thought I'd try a non-samsung cable as I've already tried 2 official ones and now plug and play is working! I'm going to power off and try again.
