You need to use a file explorer that lets you see system files. Astro, ES File Explorer, Super Mangager are all good free ones.

ok i dont mean to keep asking for help -- but i tried i really did!!
i downloaded all 3 apps u recommended. but none of them allowed me to write in /system/media.
You have to switch it to RW (Read/Write) instead of RO (Read Only). Not sure where that option is in Astro, but if you use ES File Explorer you have to press Menu, then check the boxes next to Root Explorer and Mount File System. Then change the Home Directory to "/" (delete sdcard/ from the default setting) and you should be able to modify it.

ok i figured it out! i think! preference in super manager seems to have a root option. brb!
i managed to do it phew. ok related question -- in the process of trying to figure it out myself i:
1) downloaded busybox and installed
2) realised that super manager has its own busybox
3) uninstall busybox
4) busybox takes > 5mins to uninstall and i simply rebooted.
now... i have this "unclean" feeling. the question is -- if i reflash aokp (cwm > wipe > flash) will this erase the unwanted busybox changes?
Glad you figured it out. Busybox is included w/ AOKP also, so if you modified/removed the included file then yes that would put it back to how it was. It won't affect anything you've downloaded from Market though without a data wipe.
