Google announced Android 4.2 with Nexus 4, 7 and 10

someone please correct me if this has been previously pointed out.. but it just clicked in my head all of the sudden, is the naming convention here that the 4 in nexus 4 references the screen size as it does in the 7 & 10?

I don't know for sure, but that makes sense. The actual screen size is 4.7 in, so rounding up it would be "Nexus 5," though. LOL

That is true, nearly 3/4 of an inch is a big chunk to round down

No, because if that were the case, the Nexus One would have had a tiny 1 inch screen. The 4 simply means it's the fourth model phone designated as a Nexus.

+1 Deal killer for me. I need VZW for coverage reasons. Also bad decision by Google; leaving out the largest carrier to sell the Nexus line.

If that's the case, it makes me wonder why they named their tablets Nexus 7/10? They do seem to indicate the screen size. Sure, they are tablets, not phones, but if Google want to promote "Nexus" as a single product line, they'd want to use a consistent naming convention.

My personal guess is that the name "Nexus 4" is intended to mean both the 4th generation Nexus _and_ a 4.x inch screen model. This would work well for the next Nexus model, too, as it would likely have a near 5-in. screen.

Because, as you said, they aren't phones, therefore they would not be part of the nexus phone line naming scheme. In the case of tablets, the screen size is often the most notable and easily distinguishable feature, especially for under informed consumers, which isn't quite the case with phones. Additionally, 4.7 is already near 5...If they were rounding screen sizes, it would make far more sense to round it up to 5 than down to 4. I can say with almost complete certainty that Nexus 4 is called that based on nothing more than it being the 4th Nexus phone.

Of course this wouldn't even be a conversation of they were a little more creative with their naming of the phone, but whatev's.

They may hit the wall when it's time to name the 7th generation Nexus phone. ;-)
