Great explanation & points, grapthar! Being able to selectively include & exclude people is what makes G+ great, but I still barely use it.

Maybe that's why I don't really use it...honestly use fb to annoy/challenge/offend/make people think more than a life update thing...I agree with ipeck..real friends I just call...see fb as my collection of imaginary friends

I don't really like and social media. I use Facebook when I'm extremely bored. Fb is a place to gather fake friends that your met once at a party and never see again. Usually I'm only looking for funny photos that people post lol. Great points guys don't see how they keep Google plus going when it's an obvious failure.

I may be in the minority, but I love G+, and use it all the time. Met lots of people with similar interests, post lots of pix for family and close friends, and much less a"noise" than FB, which I still keep reluctantly for work and less tech-saavy friends.

    1. It requires explanation.
    2. It requires people not be lazy.

The first one is simply that since they do things differently, their design principle for this was different. They never explained that to anybody. Facebook is for people who like sharing what they had for breakfast and how it felt going out... with everyone. That's how MySpace, Friendster and every other social network had done it. It's the lowest common denominator.

Google Plus wasn't designed for that. They decided that we associate with groups of people. I'm Christian, by example, but I don't feel the need to discuss my beliefs with people that may not share them, or worse, be offended by them. So, I can target message to a Circle of other like minded people. Following this, I might discuss the most-decidedly-un-Christian bachelor party I'm planning for a friend... but the deacons and priests that are in my Christian Circle would probably not want to be privy to such.

All it takes is typing my message, selecting the circles (or the individual) and then hitting post. That extra step is too confusing to some, too difficult for others and that's what ultimately defeated Google Plus thus far. Nevermind the fact that this is the way responsible people should be using social media. G+ also neatly solves the "problem" of unwanted friends. Some people do not want to offend others like the obscure high school acquaintance that suddenly wants to be in on your life. You can put them in a Circle... meant for exclusion from any updates. They get satisfied seeing you've added them to a circle. You neatly place them outside your sandbox. Win win.

Tying Twitter into this is also neatly done. You CAN post to the general public, which would have the Twitter effect for anyone following you. Let's face it, though. I'm just not that interesting to other people. That said, I've got Joe Satriani, Felicia Day and about a dozen others that *I* find fascinating and I follow them. One stop shop.

I hope Google gains some yardage. I do like their implementation way better than Facebook.

Edit: One other thing I forgot that I really like. I can't post on your "Wall.". You can't post on mine. I can send a post to you, but you have to consciously click Publish to share this and make it viewable to all who follow you. That way your mother doesn't need to know I held your head over a toilet last night because you couldn't stop taking body shots off that coed.

Nail on the head! Wish you could just post on someone's page instead of having to post them selecting that circle or single person. It doesn't make sense of your on someone's page you cant start a new post. No you have to go back to your page to post on theirs. Google fixes this they might get more people. Google plus did it right with the circles, and posting to only the people you want to. Also a good place for general news about Google and technology in the what's hot section. Still not good enough for people to make the switch. Google plus also isn't covered with ads which is also good they just need to fix some key things.

I definitely understand the wish list of wanting to post on their page, but again, this goes counter to Google's design principle. Plus is about YOU, not them. If you want to send them message, you just get tying and then target it to them. This also saves a few steps.

    Facebook:
    Click on "friends"
    search for friend
    select friend
    choose Write Post
    type message
    post

    Google:
    type message
    type friend's name
    post

Now, efficiency isn't best if it's more sensible for you to do it a longer, more intuitive path. Think of it like hotkeys. Most people don't go beyond cut/paste. I know many that don't even use those. They're perfectly content to go to Edit, cut, copy, paste.

Also, in FB, if you post on their wall, everyone sees it. In my prior post example, that guy's mother would see my anecdote about him vomiting after too many body shots. With Google, you can choose to keep this between us, or you may elect this as a shining moment you're proud to share with everyone.

Google gives you that choice. Facebook does not. (I think.)

    Really nice description of Google+!

I love the concept and am very slowly trying to build up circles of interest.

I use Facebook to connect with people I know and Google+ (and twitter) for everyone else.
