Yup you can for sure .. backup is good in case the kernel doesn't boot up or an issue...you can always get back to before you tried to flash it..
I've had a few bootloops for trying stuff I shouldn't so it comes in handy...

I would suggest going with a Milestone first. Should play well with your phone.

I think a good feature in the Franco kernel app would be an option to back up the stock kernel before flashing a new one not a big deal I guess as I'm on stock 4.0.4 imm76k running milestone 3 and I gotta say its amazing how just flashing a kernel makes the performance and battery life that much better.

Does Lean Kernel have an APP in Google Market/Play store like Glados and Franco? I love having those Apps. Easy quick download of updates. Easy quick changes.

I tried the 1536 kernel w/ cm9 rc1 rom and it made my phone extremely slow. Scored 970 with the quadrant benchmark. Switched to franco milestone 4 kernel, noticed a huge increase in performance and scored around 3700 in quadrant.

Standard gnex quadrant score is around 3000
