How to install new kernel and best kernel for battery life?

Just a quick one. Fairly new to all this, have recently flashed a custom rom for the first time - Apex v1.0.2. Have heard a custom kernel can help with battery life which is my main concern. Any suggestions as to which would pair best with this, or suggestions for a completely new Rom/Kernel setup? Also having never flashed a kernel before is it as simple as wiping Dalvik Cache and Cache and installing a zip from SD? Thanks for your time and patience!

When I flash a kernel, I don't wipe anything. But you can if you want. As for what's the best combo for your phone, the best way is to try different ones. Every phone acts different. It's also a good idea to make a backup before you flash anything. Just in case

I wipe Dalvik Cache when I flash a new kernel. I've been running AOKP M4 with Franco r89 and been getting really good battery life.

Well if you can flash your rom you can flash a kernel...download (kernel) place on sd card(internal storage) boot into recovery wipe dalvik cache/cache. install zip(kernel)
reboot ..done your phone should update as far best kernel...that depends every phone is different ...what might work for me might not be the best for you try a few out

For my short time on the Gnex thus far, I've mostly been running a couple variations of Franco's kernel. I found that undervolting does help battery life some, although I take it in very small steps.

sj1, I'm with you requiring guidance with kernels! I'm running Sourcery 2. My ?s to all, there are 15 kernels to choose from in the ICS tools/customize/kernel dwnlds, does this save to sd card & then do nandroid, wipe dalvik cache/cache install kernel zip? If problems occur, try anther kernel next or go back into recovery and install backup before selecting a different kernel?
    Thanx in advance
