Text alert sound won't stop.

Hi. I recently purchased a galaxy nexus and it is my first android phone. So I'm having a bit of trouble setting it up the way I want it to.
My current annoyance is this:
Whenever a text message arrives, the alert sound keeps beeping until I pull down the notification drawer or read the message. If, two messages arrive without me doing wither of the two aforementioned things, another round of alert sounds starts and it seems that now two different alerts are playing on loop.
It happens with all the ringtones present currently on the phone.
I turned the phone silent to avoid the infernal beeping, but when I turned it back on it started again, endlessly repeating the infernal sound.

The phone came with stock Android 4.0.4 and I immediately upgraded it to 4.1.1 over WiFi. I have not rooted it or otherwise messed with the configuration other than tweaking things in the settings application.

If there is any solution to this, please advise. I have looked into the obvious areas to no avail.

It sounds weird, but this got fixed when I switched ring tones. o.O

i have the same problem and every time that happens i have to reboot the phone or else it keeps playing.it has to be a way to stop the sound without needing to read the message or open it.it's a great phone but this is a little annoying!
