    Confusion about contacts

    I am a newbie. I have a (used) Nexus S running Android 4.1.1.

There are apparently two places where contacts are stored.

First there is access through the People app. I found this gratuitously loaded with my contact list fom Gmail. Second there is a list generated when entering the phone number and adding a new contact.

This second one seems more intuitive but there appears to be no way to edit a contact generated by this method since touching the contact name results in dialing that person. Contacts accessed through the People app are not accessible when using the phone.

I have not been able to find a 4.1 or 4.1.1 User's guide. The latest one I can find is for 2.3. It is a 380 page PDF and lacks an index.

Can someone enlighten me on how contacts can be handled. Better yet, please point me to a manual that is suitable for my hardware/software.

I feel your pain. I don't know of a guide. But if you tell us what you want to do, I'm sure we can help.

Tapped from a Galaxy Nexus using Xparent ICS

I want preferably a single repository for Contacts which is easy to enter data, easy to edit previously entered data and which is accessible when using the phone. Neither the People app contact list or the one accessible from the phone match all of these criteria. Pardon my newbie-ness. This seems to be a very simple problem and I have spent a lot of time looking for a solution, but it is beyond me.

I have used the Go Contacts EX app, downloadable for free on the Market. It does a good job merging all of the repositories into one location. It has intelligence to get rid of the doubles as well. Lastly, to address your sorting concerns, it will group it intuitively, or how you wish.

Go Contacts EX looks good so far, but I can't figure out how to delete a contact with it. But many thanks, it looks like it will do what I really need.

Could we go back to the issue on the stock people app? I'm trying to understand something. Did you say that the contacts under this app cannot be edited because when you tap on them, it calls the contact? Have you tried pressing the menu button so that the options on what you can do to the contact show up?

Yes, that is what I am saying. If I press the menu button, I get: Contacts to display; Import/export; Clear frequents; Accounts; Settings. No edit, no delete.

Click on a contact then press menu so that you will get the edit option for that particular contact

No, sorry. It's probably an operator error but if I acccess contacts through the Phone app, I cannot edit or delete. Selecting a contact always results in dialing.

Accessing contacts through the People app, does allow edit, delete, etc, but adding a contact here does not result in the contact being available in the Phone contact list.

At the suggestion of arborij, I am using GO Contacts EX.

    Sorry to be so dense.

In the phone app click on the picture of the contact and that will open a pop up, then click on the name, that will open the contact card, click them menu in the upper right corner and click edit.
