Battery drain question from a total newbie

Hi guys, I realize that this type of question gets asked a lot but not only did I just get my Galaxy Nexus, it's also the first smartphone I've ever purchased so I feel a little lost here.

I want to know why my battery drains so quickly and what I can do to stop that. It even drains quickly over night as you can see:

I realize that this is a general issue with smartphones but from my research I feel that my battery shouldn't drain that quickly if I'm not even using my phone. I did some googling and people in this thread are saying their battery only drains 1%-2% per hour. How is that even possible?! It seems like most of them have rooted their phones, but it seems that some haven't, so I'm confused. As I understand it, the phone should enter sleep mode automatically when the screen dims and I'm not using the phone, but that doesn't explain why my phone drains so quickly overnight.

I also did some search on this site but it seems like each person has done something different with his phone. Can anyone explain the best way to fix my battery issues in newbie language?

Welcome to the forum both of you. There could be several factors having an impact on the battery life. Incuding but not limited to a rouge app using data keeping the cpu awake, low signal strength cause the phone to continuously search for signal, wifi being on, gps being on, screen brightness. Hard to tell with the limited info you gave.

That said, turning LTE off when not using it may help as it is a big battery hog. Reducing the screen brightness and turning wifi, gps and data off when not using them will help.

It would be 4G on a Verizon phone. If your phone is stock, go to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Network Mode and choose CDMA only. Not sure if there is an easier way as I haven't seen a stock phone in quite a while.

Thanks dpblusea. I already do all that and I don't know why some nights, while I'm sleeping, the battery drains so quickly. Is there a tool that monitors which apps are draining the battery?

To stop the phone searching from a signal at night or when I want to conserve battery, is it best to put it in airplane mode or is there a better way?

And in general, it seems to me that the battery should last far longer than it is during the daytime when I am using the phone as well. I don't know if this is because I'm not used to smartphones. At this point what else can I do to maximize battery life? Or do I have to root my phone?

GSam Battery Monitor will do that for you. It's free in the Play Store.

My battery drains 5% per hour. Don't know how people get 1-2% per hour. Avenue usage lasts. 20 hrs. (wifi is on about 4 hours).

Can you tell me how you're doing that? I would estimate that mine drains 10% per hour on regular standby (with wifi and 3g on), and probably 30% if I'm using the phone.
