WELCOME to the forum! I suggest trying to download the latest Google Play store from HERE via your phone. Once it downloads, go ahead and install and see if it fixes your issue.

    Welcome to the Forum,

You'll need to go into menu.settings.security and be sure that the "unknown sources" option is checked to install the Play app after you've downloaded it.

You'll need to un-lock and root the phone

    http://www.galaxynexusforum.com/foru...-more-lte.html

and then this section has ROMs based on updated source
    Galaxy Nexus ROMs [GSM]

probably the only way to get an update unless your carrier or Google pushes one

Good news is you'll get the PlayStore when you do this.

I would do a factory data reset. That should get your market.

ok the nexus toolkit is asking me what build i have.
    i have android 4.0.1 and the build number is: "full_maguro-eng a.0.1 ICL23D 288 test-keys"
this option is not in the toolkit.

a few more problems i have just realized:
there is no screen lock whenever i press the off key and turn on again. even though "slide" is selected in security.screen lock
there is no option for face unlock

and as far as i understand, ROMs refer to custom versions of the original ICS. and to install a "ROM" i have to "root". but is the ORIGINAL ICS ROM available?

Paul said it best. If my idea didn't work I would try a factory reset. That should get you back to stock and have the play store. I was hoping my idea would have worked. Go to setting...factory reset
