If she hits back or home (left or center) it will close out of camera.

Is it that hard to remember just to hit the center button ANYTIME you are somewhere you don't want to be? (this is not a knock on your mom)

Tell her to hit the center dot anytime she's not where she wants to be.

But my phone did come from Verizon with the bootloader unlocked.
Hmmm, if it's pre-unlocked I may go ahead and root it. Perhaps they're learning that we're less likely to return these things if they let us fiddle with them and get them working the way we want.

Can you recommend a good rooting guide?

For me, no, but for older folks, yes, it's kind of hard. She has to think about it each time and putting the icon there would help. This isn't blocking her from using the phone, but I'd just like to remove an annoyance if I can.

Since DF is basically my home, I used these methods:

[How To] Unlock Bootloader & Root Galaxy Nexus

After that, you will want to get a custom recovery: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sho....php?p=1912347
[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery *CDMA Edition* (Final Version)

And then it's always a good idea to be able to go back to stock: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sho....php?p=1914323

OK, I'm rooted. Where should I look to mangle the icons?

The next step would be to flash a rom. You can find some here: Galaxy Nexus ROMs [LTE/CDMA] Long story short, we cant modify a stock rom like we can a custom rom. If you want the long story, look into odexed(stock) & deodexed(custom) roms.

Now for the softkeys icons. We're only going to be able to replace them with the same icon. In other words, we cant put the back, home & recent icons back. When the phone makes those disappear & replaces them with the dot, it uses that dot for all 3 softkeys. There isnt 3 dots for us to place a back icons for one & a home icon for another. So, just pick an icon or text that you would like to replace the dots with then let me know. Also let me know what rom you're on & I'll make you everything you'll need.
