What's the little flashing down arrow on the top left of the screen?
I just got my GN today, it's my first Android device.
A little downward pointing arrow has appeared in the upper left hand corner of the screen. What does it signify? I've looked at the running apps and I don't see anything that might account for it. Is the device doing a giant download of some sort?

probably download. google market apps (maps, gmail) update themselves so that's probably what you saw. if you pull down the notifivation bar, it should tell you what it was
It usually means an app is downloading and installing. If you pull down the notification bar (swipe down from the top of screen) it will tell you exactly what it's doing.
Have you backed up your files and pictures? I see too many desperate cries for help recovering deleted priceless pictures with no solution.

to add with the others posted before me- even a download/install is complete, the icon will still stay there. Just because the icon is there does not mean it is active at that point. It will be there until you acknowledge and close it out or access that info by going to the notification bar.

I figured out what it was, it was a SAMBA transfer that got stuck. I couldn't figure out how to kill it except by rebooting.
