    Boot Animations

Changing the boot animation on the Galaxy Nexus is something almost everyone can do. UPDATE: Since the 4.0.4 update it looks like you MUST be rooted in order to do this.

I thought we could have a thread where people can post links to existing boot animations or a place where people may want to share their own creations.

Here's a couple I created in our native 720x1280 resolution, they're not up-scaled so look nice and sharp.
Based on the original android animation and an ICS blue droid. I like to keep things simple.

    1. 2.

    Download link 1. here: bootanimation.zip
    Download link 2. here: bootanimation.zip

Important: this file is not flashable in CWM like other .zips, you just copy it to /data/local (rooted), or use ADB to push it. The folder /data/local is a root folder, i.e. not the /data folder that you see via the "Internal Storage" drive on your PC.

    ADB Instructions (for first timers).

Step 1. Download and install the USB driver for the Galaxy Nexus here: Nexus_USB_driver.zip

Step 2. Download and copy the ADB files to a new folder on your hard drive: ADB_files.zip

Step 3. Download the batch files I created here: batchFiles.zip, extract the two files to the folder you created in Step.2.

Step 4. Download the bootanimation.zip file you want and save it in the same folder you created in Step.2 (it must be called bootanimation.zip for it to work).

Step 5. Make sure USB Debugging is enabled in Developer options on your phone and connect the USB cable to the PC.

    Step 6
. Double click pushBootAnimation.bat to push the animation to your phone and test it (the new animation should play until you close the command window).

You can remove it and go back to stock with deleteBootAnimation.bat, and you can test the active boot animation on the device with testBootAnimation.bat.

Troubleshooting: If the command window opens and closes and nothing appears to happen, check you have followed the above steps exactly, the ADB files, batch files and bootanimation.zip must be in the same folder on your PC. If the animation fails to push to the device you will still see an error and the stock animation will play instead. If the new bootanimation pushes but fails to play at all, then please delete it from your device, there is likely to be a problem with the .zip file itself.

Once you have the USB driver and ADB installed, you can simply rename/replace bootanimation.zip with a new one you've downloaded and push it with ADB as much as you like, it will overwrite the existing one on the phone.

There is a huge number of Galaxy Nexus boot animations here: Boot Animations (please be careful with the 4.0.2 flashable zips as they usually copy the file to /system/media which I can't personally recommend because it replaces the stock animation file, but that's up to you. To be safe, I would suggest extracting the bootanimation.zip from the flashable zips and copy/push it manually to the /data/local folder on all versions, including 4.0.2).

Please don't blame me for breaking your phone if you run into problems or get any kind of boot-loop, you do this at your own risk.

    -----------------------
    ADB Commands (for Advanced users)

Push the animation to your phone

    Code:
    adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
    Test the active boot animation

    Code:
    adb shell bootanimation
Delete bootanimation.zip and go back to stock

    Code:
    adb shell rm /data/local/bootanimation.zip

Nice, very useful info and I like simple, so I'll grab your animation and run it for a while.

Thanks, let me know if you have any problems, I wasn't sure if there was a difference in the file format for 4.0.3.

I just used ADB, there's no need to change it's name, type or contents. (It has to be named bootanimation.zip). Just make sure USB Debugging is on, and use the adb command on your PC like this

    Code:
    adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
Then you can test it with this

    Code:
    adb shell bootanimation
I'm sure there are other ways, that's just what I did since I'm not rooted (yet).

OK, then since I'm rooted I can just copy if there. I'll give it a go, and if it works on any flavor of ICS it should work on the rest

Also, as noted in the other thread, if you copy it to /data/local/ and decide you don't like it, you can just delete bootanimation.zip from /data/local/ and it'll default back to the stock animation.
