Nexus Running Stock JB 4.1.1. Root? Root+Rom? Custom Kernel?

I just got the Nexus a couple of weeks ago, and they rep loaded JB for me during the activation process (I'm assuming OTA. I didn't ask). So far, I love the stability and features of JB, and my only conerns are battery life, and having access to a FREE mobile hotspot solution so I don't have to pay extra for occasionally tethering my iPad. I used Foxfi on my stock Moto Photon, but that's out of the picture for the time being, and I really want to have the WiFi Hotspot + better battery life so I don't just eat through all my power.'

    So...

    1) Is there root for JB 4.1.1? If so, what is the best, easiest, solution? Again, not sure if the Sprint store did the OTA, but, let's assume they did.

    2) Does Rooting eliminate my ability to go to 4.1.2, and does it really matter?

    3) What are the best WiFi hotspot apps for a rooted device that are NOT just toggles for the onboard WiFi Hotspot?

    4) Will I really get better battery life out of a custom ROM or Kernel than i get out of a well configured Juice Defender?

    5) What are the best, most stable, truest to stock ROMs or Kernels that give the most optimized battery life? Where do I find them? Ease of implementation is key, thank you.

    6) Along that same veign, is there a place that lists all the ROM's and Kernels with breakdowns of features and benefits?

    Thanks to all!

check the Xda gnex dev thread for wugs root kit. don't worry about getting yourself to a certain version. If you are rooted and rom'd the dev's will incorporate that into their roms. When I got mine, I took the ota to the most recent version and rooted/unlocked from there. I recommend eclipse to everyone. Nitro is the most reliable dev IMO, his updates are a bit slower but always flawless because he takes his time. Bugless Beast is closest to stock and is a great start. I use the kernel that comes with eclipse but imoseyons lean kernel is well regarded for its simplicity

Explore here: Galaxy Nexus Android Development - xda-developers think juice defender is overrated I get average of 18 hours with eclipse its kernel. I use this app anytime i update builds and it gives me great results. instructions are super simple https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&feature=rel ated_apps#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwOSwiY29tLm5lbWEuYmF0d GVyeWNhbGlicmF0aW9uIl0.

Thanks to everyone who replied. One last question... how is device speed in relation to battery life? What is the trade off for getting 18 hours out of your battery?

    Thanks again!

Zippy as stock on my end. I really can't stress enough how stable and smooth clipse is. I have been using it since my Bionic and I literally haven't flashed anything else. Nitro really takes his time and puts a lot of love in his builds. That said, there are plenty of other choices that are very well regarded out there. But again to answer your question no speed sacrifice. I make no additional tweaks just flash the builds and leave it as is
