Unlocked GSM question regarding network selection

I have an unlocked Google phone on T-Mobile and I am suddenly experiencing very poor reception and very slow data speeds (from H to E) in the Los Angeles and Orange counties. I called customer service and they were no help. I went to the T-Mo local store and they blamed it on my 2.5 year old SIM card and gave me a new one. No difference whatsoever. One question that I have for those who have the same phone, is there a difference between choosing "Choose automatically" and "T-Mobile"?

I had the same issue, my SIM was 10 years old! With the old SIM, I saw only the Edge and H symbols. T-Mobile shipped me a new SIM, put it in last night and registered at t-mobile.com/SIM. Got a SMS this morning saying thanks for upgrading, could receive 3G in some areas. Not getting 4G even when am in areas that are indicated as 4G on T-Mo's maps. I've stuck mine to T-Mo network only, wary of data roaming charges.
