Poor picture quality...hardware or software related?

So I've had the nexus since launch day, and have been less than impressed with the camera. That's my only gripe. The pictures, at least the comes I've taken indoors under indoor lighting, are horrible. Grainy and unfocused. Even with manually focusing the thing.

Pics taken outside in sunlight seem to be better. The question I have is, could this simply be an issue with the software for the camera, or is it hardware (i.e. 5mp vs the 8 for other high end devices)?

I'm going to try out some other camera apps to see. Thoughts? Tips?

Have you tried holding the shutter button down for 1/2 sec or so and then releasing it? I've had better luck with this approach, as I think the phone, since it reacts so fast, may be shooting at a time when you're jabbing the button, which is not exactly stable.

Has anyone else had problems. I have noticed using the zoom the pictures come out very blurry. When my HTC EVO didn't do this at all.

Welcome to the forum. Before taking the picture tap the area you want focused and it will come out very clean.

Might also make sure that the lens is clean. I work as a tech in a cell-phone store and I'd say 7 out of 10 "bad picture" issues are either a)dirty lens or b) left the plastic protector on the lens.

I second Paul's post. Most people do not know the trick about tapping the screen to focus the camera first. When the square markers turn green, you can take the photo and it will be crisp and clear.

'Course, like Trelane said, I wipe my lens off before each use too, so that isn't an issue for me. Would be worth checking. I see people with fingerprints on their lens all the time.
