    Wifi grip / signal issue

    Hi,

I've had my GSM galaxy nexus for about a week now and have noticed that the signal strength will drop consistently when touching the back of the phone.

This is usually by one bar on the status bar meter. I've installed Wifi Analyzer and see that the signal will drop from around -55 dBm to -70 dBm when fully covering the back. The drop will be smaller with less of the back of the phone covered, but is still noticeable. The worst area for causing signal drop seems to be just below the camera lens.

Is this common to the galaxy nexus, or is there something unusual about this particular one?

I've noticed that too with my gnex. If I hold it anywhere near the top, I'll lose a few bars

    BTW, Welcome to GNF!

    Thanks, nice forum!

If it's normal, I guess I can live with it

I just tried mine (GSM) and it is nothing like that. I even put my whole palm over the top and back with no apparent signal degradation at all.
Walked around the house to see if it's any different and the answer is no.

Now, just for the hell of it, I also tried my Nexus One and it was different. With the palm placed over the top, the Wi-Fi signal does lose one bar.

I have a very poor signal (dBm -107 ATM) at home. Covering the back, especially left side, definitely does affect my cell signal (it just went to -115 dBm while covering it). I'm a lefty so have trained myself to hold it so I do not cover the antenna. When I'm in a really good (strong) service area, covering the back doesn't seem to be a problem on my Google Galaxy Nexus with Straight Talk AT&T. FWIW, I tried T-Mobile for a month with virtually no signal inside. In the past nine months, our contract Sprint phones +12yrs with them) have barely been able to receive any signals. Fortunately, the GNex has wifi to compensate for this at home.
