For what it's worth, a friend of mine went through this, too. There do seem to be some phones in the mix with bad 4G radios, and after two replacements, he finally got one that worked reliably. It might be worth fighting Verizon on.

Vzw gave my wife an s iii after 7 or 8 replacement nexus in about 4 months.. Guess they got tired of giving me a 50/month data credit and overnighting so many phones. I did have to talk to a regional president to get the device switched because the yes men kept trying to throw out razr maxx (in her words she didn't want that square garbage no matter how good the signal was she wanted a touchwiz galaxy s 3 like her first Android phone the mesmerize /fascinate). But yeah don't give up and don't just accept a phone cause they tell you it is better.. They tried to push a d4 in place of a 300$ nexus..
