Airplane mode alternating on/off every 3 seconds -- no mobile service

I switched to the Nexus just over a week ago. I was driving and talking in a a rural area when I dropped a call. when my mobile signal didn't return, I notice that the airplane mode was on. I held the power button to get the screen with 3 options (silent, airplane, power off). At that I noticed the Airplane mode was alternating on and off litterlly about every 3 to 5 seconds. I called my service provider (I-Wireless....affiliate in Iowa for T-Mobile) and they said they were going to check it. After 3 days, I haven't heard anything so I returned my phone as an out of box failure. My new phone is working good, but I haven't traveled to a dead area yet to duplicate when my problem orginated.

Was there a fix to the Airplane mode issue that I could have done? Is this a common problem?

Wow - that's bizarre. A reboot didn't cure it either?

I've not heard anything like this before, so I'd chalk it up a a faulty device ...

I tried
1. Powering off and restarting
2. Removed the battery for at least 5 minutes
3. Going into Settings-Wireless & Networks screen and select the airplane mode setting to overide anything that it was doing.
4. Slammed it on the ground.......not really, but was frustrated with it.

I've not read of any issues with airplane mode.. the only time I can remember that happening was with a previous phone and I threw on a custom rom on it...it was causing the issues..not on any stock versions though...Also did you try a reboot after it started going off/on?

So dumb question. What is considered a reboot?

Well, if your stock power off and then on. Custom ROMs have a reboot option.

Apologies I'm always thinking custom.. Yes power off phone pull battery then wait and reinsert..

I did pull the battery....so I would say it should have rebooted.

Update.....I did exchange the phone and haven't had a problem since. I am hoping it was just a faulty phone. Fortunately for me it happened in the first 30 dayds.

This exact thing happened to me. I was driving through a rural area, lost signal, and never got it back again.

Removing the battery did not fix the problem.

The settings menu from holding the power button shows Airplane mode alternating On and Off. Also, the phone status shows 'unknown' for nearly everything, including my phone # and IMEI.

Also, my SIM card works fine in other phones.

I'm thinking of formatting my phone... feel like I've made a bad choice with the Galaxy Nexus...
