    i rooted

so far my experience is not good.

my one goal was to obtain tethering.

the factory tethering does not work. if i enable it, 3G goes off. disable it, 3G comes back on. so i downloaded a root tether app, and that works. until you turn it off. the my phone crashes and reboots.

    *sigh*

now all my settings are crazy. texts are going out via google voice instead of my regular number, and i cant figure out how to get that off.

all the videos i watch show skipping the initial setup while youre rooting or unrooting, i think this is why my phone behaves this way.

at this point, i want to get back to just like new out of the box, and start over. rooting has turned out to be "not for me", but to each his own.

I second this, works without any trouble or rooting. Just download, launch and tether. Used it with my Galaxy S1 to tether iPod Touch so I could use all the bells and whistles on my Pioneer head unit like app mode and such (for basically free GPS instead of paying extra for the GPS module and displaying movies via Netflix) since I had to "borrow" the data signal from the S1 to use such apps

well I'm back to full factory settings. almost all of my friends root, and even with all the reading i did, when i did mine it didnt work as advertised. i just didnt feel i could guarantee myself a 100% stable experience (i did experience many crashes from attempting to tether, which was 90% of my reason to root).

i actually consult for a samsung repair facility here in plano tx, so just carried it over there. one of their line techs wiped it and reset it fully back to factory fresh for me.

maybe when i get my next phone, ill be willing to play around with this one again

Check out Fox-Fi bud. No need for root and it lets you tether via WiFi (and Bluetooth i believe)...I don't use it much, but like i mentioned above, right when I got my GNex fresh out the box I installed Fox-Fi, launched the app and tethered my iPod Touch 4th Gen to it via the WiFi and it worked like a charm.

Ouch, it wont let you use it? I'm on Verizon so I'm not sure what Sprint does to limit it....is it Fox-Fi you cant get? Cause if you're looking to tether a computer via ur phone pdanet works great, but that might be disabled for you just the same

That's weird. Two of my coworkers on sprint use foxfi and no issues.

Did you try and sideload it? Or go to a rom that has it built in is also an option. I spend a lot of time sitting in my truck doing PWHT, tether is a must!
