How do I set instant notifications for Gmail?

I am able to set my Hotmail account to get instant notifications of emails, but it's not working with Gmail. I have "get notifications of emails" checked off in Gmail settings, but I still have to check manually. Does anybody know how I can fix this? Thanks.

Have you checked settings > accounts > gmail? The box needs to be checked for syncing. If it ism you may have to clear data under manage aps.

Yep sync was turned off. I thought checking that "get notifications" box was all I had to do. That fixed my problem, thank you!
