    Should I root my GN?

I've had a stock non-rooted droid x for a little over a year now. Following the knowledgeable crowd on the dx forum I read and read and taught myself the whole root, rom, overclock etc. procedure but stayed stock. I deemed it too risky to proceed without a computer to SBF in case I erred or wanted to take an ota.

Given my situation, does the unlocked bootloader in the GN change the game at all? Will the SBF action be simpler? Will I still need a computer?

Should I continue to avoid advanced - and potentially risky - procedures like roming but consider rooting my GN just to have the option of a few beneficial apps (and what might these be? )

When the GN finally gets here I'm certain I will be very content to just stay stock and have fun with third party launchers and such. But I would very much appreciate what you all have to say.

Oh, I'll be paying retail for my GN so buying a pc is out of the question. And using some friend's computer isn't a favorable option presently.

    Thank you.

Honestly, if you don't have a computer you can get access to in the event of needing to return to stock for something going wrong I wouldn't mess with the root process.

Rooting will open up your system files to be tinkered with but if you don't plan to flash a custom ROM or customize in another way using the system files it really isn't *that* beneficial. Once you root and start playing with stuff you open up the chances of something going wrong and needing a computer to get out of it.

If you have been happy with your stock X for this long I'm sure the GNex and ICS will be just fine for you.

Once the device is actually released here in the states in sure we will know more about it and stuff but fit now I would say just stick with stock and I'm sure you will be very happy with it later on after it's been out for a little while and things look stable and you want to root and such then I'm sure you could do it. Just without a computer it would make me somewhat nervous but who knows

I agree with D. Samsung phones use a software program called Odin to return to stock, flash radios, etc. Not sure if the same would apply to a Google phone (I imagine it would if it was made by Samsung). In any case, rooting & flashing is a more risky endeavor if you can't access a computer in case something goes wrong.

Personally I would say root+overclock, but don't use any custom roms. That's when you get into the sketchy stuff that can go wrong. Obviously bad stuff can happen during rooting, but I have yet to hear a case of a phone dieing during the root process.

Another vote for stock until you have a computer readily available. As Muji said, returning to stock and performing other tasks should be painless with it being a Samsung. Just too risky without a PC and Odin though.

It looks like he is using tapatalk to post. Tapatalk lets you browser through all the forums that were a part of tapatalk. Great app, I'd never have time to browse my forums if I didn't have it

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. Very helpful. I'll skip rooting for now.

My dx has been problem free and I couldn't be happier with it despite staying stock. I'm sure I'll enjoy the stock GN just as much.

@plumcrazy - haha, yes I do have my Droid X but no pc.
