    Signal strength icon

I notice that when I turn off Wi-fi, a grey "G" appears appears above the signal strength icon in the top-right. I can't find any guide to what this means. Any ideas? Is there any indication whether I have a 2G or 3G signal?

    Thanks

Having a G means using 2g or gprs. Having E is Edge. 3G for regular 3g and H is hspda

    Reception icon confusion.

Hey there guys! got my galaxy nexus about a week ago and I am loving it so far but one thing is still confusing me about the phone and that is the reception icon. It seems to change between these different icons and I do not know what all of them mean:

    - Just a greyed out reception bar which I assume means zero reception? but not 100% sure.
    - Sometimes it says H above the icon instead of 3g what does H mean? also it sometimes says G.
    - At other times it says E which I think means Edge?
    - Other times it says nothing at all just a completely grey logo.
    - Then sometimes it has part of the grey filled with blue? this is my reception level?

Any help would be appreciated as I came from Iphone and I am used to either seeing bars or 3g (not a grey bar or some of these letters which I haven't heard of).

Welcome to GNF!! I believe the answer you're looking for can be found here:

    Signal strength icon

As for the blue, it means that you are connected to Google's servers.

    welcome to the forum...
    1. Blue means fully connected to Google services, grey means not.
    2. There are two, the up and down arrows represent which direction the data is travelling.
    3. H is HSPA(+), 3G is UMTS, E is EDGE, G is GPRS, and none is no data connectivity.

Thanks for the welcome! ok so what exactly do I achieve from being connected to googles servers? is there any major disadvantage if I am not? Also do speeds generally go in this order.. Hspa+ > 3g > Edge > GRPS? and since the arrows mean which way the data is travelling to do you mean the up arrow is uploading and down downloading? sorry for all the questions =P

You nailed it! As far as not being connected to Google's servers, you wouldn't be able to access the Market (now called Play Store) or other Google services.
