Ghost dial *22899 = PRL update

So I heard a strange sound today. So I took my phone out of my pocket and it had dialed *22899. If I ended the call it just redialed it over and over. So I put the phone in air plane mode and looked it up. Apparently it dialed *22899 to update the PRL version on the phone.

So I tried to dial *22899 which the phone will not let you do unless you create a contact with this number. Here are screenshoots of the PRL version before and after.

My PRL version was 15098 and is now 52642.

Now that's interesting, I did not think the PRL could be updated ota. Is you're phone stock? Who is your carrier ?

I just tried it on my phone after adding *22899 as a contact and got the same results. The PRL went from 15098 to 52642. Running stock but unlocked and rooted and on VZW.

Have you noticed any difference with signal strength or data since you did the update ?

I had it sitting next to my Incredible on the table and for a while the GN was within 3dBm of the DInc. It's never been that close. Whether it was an anomoly, I don't know. My GN has never had any call issues that the DInc didn't have though.

Interesting... I may have to give it a go, some kind of controlled test if I can figure out a way to do that. I have a co-worker with a gNEx so may have to get together with him and see if we can prove any difference

That would probably be the best way. Two like phones would be better than two totally different ones, one 3G and one 4G.

Unlocked, rooted running latest CNA and the update worked for me with same results. Signal is not great where I am anyway, will test later.

There is a big thread on the XDA forum about this. Apparently some people say it will screw up your SIM card badly, forcing replacement, while others claim that it vastly improced their reception because it found closer towers.

I thought that referred to *228 option #2 (Update Roaming)

This is a different number *22899
