Considering every post here has basically been a bunch of people, including a mod, telling me their GV works fine, there's absolutely no incentive for me to do that.
But I'll do it anyway. Basically it came down to the "voicemail number" option in the phone settings which apparently wasn't updating properly/automatically even after switching from Google Voice to "My Carrier" in the handler settings. I changed it manually to *86, rebooted, and was able to enter my voicemail to clear out the messages that slipped through the cracks. I reinstalled Google Voice, manually changed the number to my GV number, rebooted, and it seems to work fine now.
You'd think that selecting Carrier vs. Google Voice would correctly update the voicemail number it uses, but apparently, in this case, it wasn't.
I glad you figured out your problem....and thank you for posting how you fixed your problem...

Hey if you read my post, I offered you some help back tracking how I got my wife's GV working. You never got back to my response. The whole point of being on a forum like this is to share information, RIGHT? Thanks for sharing....
I too am experiencing this problem. I use GV, but for some reason the Verizon voice mail icon has appeared in my notification bar.
I have tried rebooting, changing the setting from GV to carrier, back to GV, signing out, logging in to GV on my pc, ect and can not figure it. When I call the Verizon voice mail inbox it says I have no messages, the same of course in GV.
Very frustrated. I registered to this forum just so I could post this.
I do receive an error on my Gnex:
"Carrier Configuration: Unfortunately your network carrier is currently not supported for automatic voicemail configuration. To us Google Voice as your voicemail provider, please visit the Google Voice Help Center for more information".
Can't figure it out there.
try this....
How To Get Rid Of Voicemail Notification?
Verizon wanted me to do a factory reset. Instead, I switched my voicemail service back to "my carrier" and dialed *73 to restore me to Verizon voicemail. I had my husband call and leave me a message. When I went to check my vm, all my ghost notifier messages were there! (When I had called previously, it said there were no messages.)
I listened to and deleted all my messages, and the notification icon disappeared after a minute or so.
Changed voicemail back to Google voice and did the *71 thing. Everything's back to normal now.
STOCK GN, updated and naked
Here is the quick and dirty solution. Joined the forum just to post this. I had this issue as well. I got the voicemail notification but im using GV. When I used the notification menu it would call my GV and not have any messages. Switching the voice mail service in my phone didn't fix it either. It turns out it was a VM that slipped by GV and got into my VZ voice mail. Instead of resetting everything I simply manually dialed my own number. This got me into my VZ voice mail. I listened and deleted the voice mail. Hope this helps others out.
I've used GV for about a year to catch all my voicemail, and the one hitch I ran into (today), is when another Verizon wireless user forwards a voicemail directly to your in-box. I got the nagging icon and couldn't get rid of it until I retrieved the voicemail. Here's how I did it:All seems to be back to normal.
- Deactivate GV by dialing *73
- Check voicemail
- Reactivate GV by dialing *71(plus GV number)
