I have a TV I want to output video/mirror mode to that isn't HD...can Video Out be setup without the MHL adapter and simply just output a standard def picture instead via the micro-USB?
Has anyone done this?

Well the first step to figuring this out would be this, do you have an interface to this tv that has a usb port? Surely it would need to be converted via some sort of adapter or box, not sure of the capabilities of the video out on the usb android side though.
I just ordered this, should do the trick
For only $8.82 each when QTY 50+ purchased - Micro USB to HDMI® MHL Adapter - Black | MHL Adapters

What HDMI mirroring app are you planning on using?

It doesn't have a USB interface, but I was planning on using the same or similar micro-USB-to-Composite cable that others have used to accomplish this on the Droid Incredible/Incredible 2: Amazon.com: OEM HTC TV Out Cable for HTC DROID Incredible: Electronics
Does anyone know if this would work or has anyone tried this? Usually it's just a matter of whether or not the phone supports video out through the Micro-USB and since this phone does, I just assumed it would work, even without the MHL.
I really don't want to have to spend money on a clunky HDMI adapter box if the MHL is required.
@evan0911, I don't know what app I would use...I'm still rocking the original Droid, so before I make the switch I want to make sure I've got all my tech specs correct, as it will influence my decision.
I've been looking for an answer to this for weeks, and no one seems to know.
Well theoretically it looks like it would work. I haven't done it specifically from the Gnex (or Incredible) though, so I wish I could be of more help.
I have an MHL adapter from Amazon. It's not clunky and it requires power to work (but it charges the phone at the same time). There is no need for a separate app to mirror it's native. Some have reported the monoprice adapter doesn't work properly though I can't confirm that.
The breakout cable listed above is not powered so not sure if it would work. Even if it does, you will not make it though a movie with that battery.

Thanks for the response. The MHL isn't clunky, but that isn't what I would need. The MHL does me no good if I don't have an HDTV...which for this, I will not. What would be clunky would be buying a digital to analog converter box for the HDMI to composite signal conversion.
I need a Galaxy Nexus to composite connection...somehow, someway.
I know some mentioned that theoretically this should work, and I tend to agree...but unfortunately, I can't spend the money on the phone until I know for sure that this can work. I'm in a tough spot with some specific requirements.
The breakout cable above isn't powered, but they make one that is. I just took the first one I found off Amazon.
The MHL adapter I purchased from Monoprice Mirrors my phone on to the TV. I might have a defective one because i get some screen flicker and no sound.

Perhaps buy the mhl adapter, plug in hdmi plus a hdmi to composite/AV cable adapter?
