Enable Wifi hotspot using unrooted phone for free!

I can't imagine that this has not already been shared, but for some reason I can't find it...so, I guess I'll put it out there just in case (sorry if it is a repost).

For those of us with an unrooted Verizon GN, if we try to turn on "Portable WiFi hotspot", it searches for a subscription and does not allow us to use this feature without paying extra.

What I just learned is that you can add a widget that will turn it on for you and bypass the subscription search. The one that I tested was called "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot Widget" by Taiseiko. After installing, it required a reboot on the phone for the widget to show up on the list. Now all I have to do is tap on the widget and the hotspot activates. I tested it with my unrooted Asus Transformer and it works like a charm.

Does this actually allow you to use your gnex as a 4g hotspot? I noticed under permissions it ask to make changes to your wifi. This will sound dumb, but I assume its to turn on and off wifi. This will not effect my device from connecting to my wifi at home will it, when the widget is turned off?

Be advised, doing this goes against the terms and conditions set forth by VZW. Do so at your own risk!

I have only tried this at home where I have 3G, so I can't confirm 4G yet. No, when the hotspot is turned off, you can turn your WiFi back on and connect at home.

    Some questions for the group:

    1. What exactly are the risks?
    2. Has anyone ever heard of Verizon adding a charge to someone's bill for using this without signing up?
    3. Is it less risky to root and use it that way?

I wonder if this could still work on a rooted phone? Only one way to find out, I guess. Brb. (And if it works, I can tell you if it works for 4G)

And I got it to work on my rooted G-Nex as well and on 4G. My wife's computer saw me and connected. As did my old DX and DX2. Nice find, Ferris.

I haven't tried it on my GN (dont have the need yet), but I have used rooted apps for making my phone wifi hotspot frequently on my DX, also used USB tethering all the time, never got asked any question.

+1. I use the USB. I thought I would try it out and help add some more info for the Ferris.

    1) The risks are always there that any app or change to the system can mess up your phone. It is always good to have a way back to "out of the box" condition.
    2) There was talk a while back of Verizon having a means to begin tracking stuff like this on people's account. Not sure if it has been put in place or even turned on, but I would bet money that if your account is one of the top 1% or you have this HUGE increase in data usage, your account will attract attention.
    3) The risk is reduced without root as permissions are not modified. But this requires permissions changes too. However, rooting opens up many more methods to do this.
