New hardware is absolutely needed. Been on the phone a couple times with VZW and Samsung who are aware there is a hardware issue but trying to pawn it off on a software issue and I am to 'WAIT" for a software upgrade to fix the busted radio. It's so obvious there is an issue as my radio goes to "x in the triangle" everything drops and comes back about 1 to 2 mins later.
And Samsung and VZW think we are sooo stupid. Exchanging the phone today and getting anything except a Samsung at this point. Very unfortunate too, I loved this phone.

Getting it replaced is the only fix besides using 3G only -- It's a hardware problem, not software.
I bought my Verizon Galaxy Nexus a few months ago from ebay. I've kinda put up with the reception problem during 4G and have left it on 3G most of the time (a shame I have to do this). Now since I didn't buy the Nexus from Verizon, would they even offer a replacement for me? Or am I stuck with what I got, until they give us a miracle radio update that will fix this problem.

I would try contacting the seller at eBay first, then Verizon. I'm not sure if Verizon would do anything since when you buy a phone from them it does come with a warranty... maybe even Samsung would replace it. Whatever you do, the sooner the better..

Thanks for the advice, but it looks like I'm going to hold off for now. Kinda found a doable solution recently.
Went ahead and installed Jelly Bean 4.1.1 AOSP by Droid Concepts for the awesomeness of Jelly Bean, thinking it'll help solve my problem. Now the radio is still not perfect, but it's less annoying now. While the 4G still disconnects once in a while, it feels less frequent than it used to. Instead of waiting 30+ secs for the 4G to reconnect after disconnecting, it takes only about 2 secs now. Most of the time, it'll actually just switch to 3G if it can't get 4G (like it's suppose to).
I also did a battery life test. Ran it with 4G and WiFi on the whole time; using my 2100mAh extended battery, and it lasted from 5:50PM-3:08AM (9hrs 18 mins), on light to moderate use. Could still be much better, but that'll work in an 8.5 hours work shift.
This is all still from about two days of use with this rom, but so far so good.

I gave up on even using 4G. The signal would CONSTANTLY drop... and I'm in Philadelphia, a 'strong' LTE coverage area.

Yeah I'm generally disappointed that this is even an issue. It's sad to think that I miss my HTC Thunderbolt, which gets phenomenal 4G speed and connections on the same locations that the GNEX barely does better than 3G. So I'm going to look up how that Samsung Warranty works now...

Well this is just sad but this is the last chance I'm giving Samsung to update the radios when thus jellybean hit the Verizon gnex or I might just jump ship back to moto and deal with the lock down crap

new to the forum and didnt read all posts to this thread but im on my third g-nex since may, 1st one had no signal issues but touch sensor went bad, 2nd one everything worked great except would not pick up any signal, just the x where the bars are supposed to be, now third one im not getting any sound but i already posted a thread about that.
i noticed the 2 phones i had great signal in were made in korea and the 1 that wouldnt connect was made in china, hmmm dont know whay that would be a problem but ive seen on other forums where some have noticed same thing.
phone made in korea= great signal but other software/hardware problems
phone made in china= no signal and poor battery life but no software/hardware problems
anyone else notice this?

So, I found out yesterday that my signal problems may not be my phone after all. My neighbor has been having signal problems with her basic phone, as has my wife. She gets a replacement phone and has to drive up the street to get enough signal to activate it. She calls VZW and they tell her that the problem is that we a pulling off of an old Altell tower that they are not buying. Said we are pretty much s.o.l. until they build a new tower in the area around the end of the year. Not cool since it seems I have to pay for inferior service, but I guess it is good news that it is not my phone after all.
