Any advice here, other than 'rooting' the phone which I don't want to do....

The "in-call" volume is really low, and my hearing not being what it used to be doesn't help any. Is there any way to boost the volume?

(If I have to root the phone, is there a simple way to do something that does nothing more than make the volume louder?)

Try the free version of Volume + from the play store. It's mostly for rooted users but I've seen it work on stock phones too. It is mostly for speaker volume but it might help with in call. Just don't turn it up too high so no speakers are blown.

I've already got the paid version, and while it has helped quite a bit with the sound from the speakers, I'm not sure it made the phone calls any louder. They're very quiet - not bad, but if there's any backgroud noise, I can't understand what people are saying.

I've gotten around that by turning on the speaker, and listening that way. Better yet, turn on the speakers, but plug in a set of headphones, which solves the problem completely.

I'd just like to have the "regular" volume (as in when you're making an ordinary phone call) louder.

I realize my hearing isn't what it used to be, but does anyone have a suggestion on how to make the phone louder? The best thing I've found so far when I'm at home trying to work on the phone while making calls, is to use a set of headphones plugged into the output plug on the bottom of the phone. If I'm in a noisy area, this helps tremendously. I'd rather just bump up the volume and use the phone normally, if I could...

I'm now using the purchased version of Volume+ and it does seem to help with everything. I'm wondering about the above wording - would the program work differently if I were to "root" my Nexus? If so, how? If I do nothing more than whatever it takes to "root" the phone, will the Volume+ then be even more effective?

If the answer is yes, then does it make any difference as to which technique or program I should use to "root" the phone? (I'm more or less opposed to rooting the phone until I feel pretty confident that I know what the standard phone is like, and how to use it effectively - and every time I start to feel confident about the phone, I find a lot of new things I don't know anything about.)

I don't know if this is new in 4.2.1 but I love it. When looking at your photos in the filmstrip mode you can just swype up or down to delete pictures. It works just like gmail now.
