Rooted Questions an Overview

Hello,

I'm new to the rooting world and I have a couple of questions.

I have the Toro, LTE, version.
I'm running the latest milestone AOKP.

I've been hearing a lot about Kernals, what are kernals? what are they use for? and how do I install one on top of my ROM?

Also, what is the best ROM to use or which one should I try out or should I keep AOKP.

Also, how do I get more battery life, I'm not over clocking it and I feel I don't get that much battery life as I use to when it was locked.

this is how it was explained to me. Think of the ROM as being a car. the KERNEL being the engine. The car can't run without the engine, so the rom can't run without the kernel. think of the theme as being the paint. It isn't needed for the car to run but it makes it look better.--thanks Mujibar

There isn't a BEST rom. It is all opinion. Just like beer, what you like I may not like. Roms are the same way. You try different ones until you find your favorite. It is all a matter of opinion. You will find that even your favorite developer from time to time will make updates that you may not like.

as for battery life....I have no idea. Once you find the perfect rom/kernel combo that works for YOUR phone then you may get better battery life. Im one of the few that could care less about battery. You have a small computer in your hand. With the power of this device and screen resolution it is going to eat the battery. My way around this is, when it is dead CHARGE IT! It is what it is.

I also don't care so much about battery life...I occasionally mess around to try to increase it but I have a charger and a car dock...and spare batteries. I use my phone how I want and either charge it (rarely) or swap batteries when I need to

Can how to I install a Kernal and Theme over a ROM without flashing the whole phone?

Is there a process anyone can explain to me?

Just read the install instructions that are in the OP of any mod you wish to install and follow them exactly. I don't normally wipe anything for kernels unless the developer says to. Themes can be different so you want to check. Be certain everything is compatible by reading thoroughly also.
