How do you back up your contacts when connected to a computer
Your contacts should be saved in Google through contacts app. Keep in mind you must make sure that contacts is checked in accounts and sync. You can verify your contacts on your pc by going to the www.Google.com/contacts

Thanks - just went to www.google.com/contacts, and all my contacts were there. So far, so good.
Is there any way to have a similar list that is stored on my laptop (PC) such that it's available even when I don't have internet access? I'm guessing that wouldn't be possible, as it would lead to a 3-way sync problem (phone / google / laptop).
Last question - it's probably obvious, but just in case.... if I make any changes on my laptop while looking at www.google.com/contacts, perhaps to correct a spelling mistake in a name, will this sync back to the phone? I assume it will, but just want to make sure.
Thanks in advance for any help.....
Well, the 'sync' seems to be working as expected, so that's good - it's easier to find and fix mistakes on the PC.
I'd still like to be able to do a "back-up" of all my contacts to the PC, even if it's just for record keeping, and not synced. Can this be done?
That's what brought me to this forum and this discussion in the first place.....
First, open your contacts. Then go to Settings, Import/export. You can send them to a file on your virtual SD card and then copy that to your computer for backup.
One last thing. Welcome to the forum!!

OK, I click on "People". This brings up my contacts.
At the bottom right I click on the three dots.
Before, I was clicking on "Settings", but following your advice, I click on Import/Export.
I assume the right choice is "Export to storage".
It then says "Your contact list will be exported to file: /mnt/sdcard/000001.vcf
I haven't actually done this yet - the GNEX doesn't have a memory card, so am I right in assuming that the file will be written to the "sdcard" part of the phone's main memory?
Thanks!!
Yup! All your contacts will be in that VCF file.
