How to organize photos on the Galaxy Nexus

I would like to re-create my photo gallery from my PC on my phone. It's organized like this:

    2011
    New York
    family
    empire state building
    statue of liberty
    Chicago
    family meeting
    Miami
    Sequarium
    Port of Miami
    2012
    New York
    family
    subway photos
    Macy's
    Chicago
    Airport photos
    Los Angeles
    Airport photos
    Miami
    Biscayne Bay
    Airport photos
    2013

    =====================================

Photos would go into the appropriate sub-sub-folder. The entire structure would be within the "Pictures" folder on the phone. For example, to get to the 2012 New York photos, using a file explorer on the phone or PC, I would go to Pictures > 2012 > New York ........and all the appropriate photos would be there.

I set this up on the phone, using Windows Explorer, copying the directory structure onto the phone. Looked good. Using ES File Explorer it also looked just the way I wanted it. Still fine (and something that I was never able to do on my iphone).

Then, I tried to use the ICS Gallery App, and what I found was:

    New York
    family
    empire state building
    statue of liberty
    Chicago
    family meeting
    Miami
    Sequarium
    Port of Miami
    New York
    family
    subway photos
    Macy's
    Chicago
    Airport photos
    Los Angeles
    Airport photos
    Miami
    Biscayne Bay
    Airport photos

The sub-folder structure was lost, but at least my photos were still organized correctly within the folders.

First question - is there a better way to do what I'm trying to do? I'd just like the whole thing to work the way it does under Windows.

My follow-up question, assuming Gallery doesn't work the way I want with sub-folders, is to do what I had to do on the iphone, and make sure each folder name was complete - so I would then have this:

    2011 New York family
2011 New York empire state building
2011 New York statue of liberty
    2011 Chicago family meeting
    2011 Miami Sequarium
    2011 Miami Port of Miami
    2012 New York family
    2012 New York subway photos
    2012 New York Macy's
    2012 Chicago Airport photos
    2012 Los Angeles Airport photos
    2012 Miami Biscayne Bay
    2012 Miami Airport photos

It's sort of a mess, but it works this way under both "Gallery" and "ES File Explorer". That's my solution, unless someone here has a better idea.

Final question - similar, but probably a bug in the "Gallery" app.

To accomplish the above, i renamed the first folder containing photographs from "family" to "2011 New York Family". This is to let it be organized automatically by ES File Explorer, but to also tell me what the folder is when I'm finding it with the "Gallery" app.

Unfortunately, while the renamed file appears correctly from the PC, and from within ES File Explorer, the "Gallery" app always shows the old name, not the new name. I figure that's probably the cache, but deleting the cache in the 'settings' area doesn't fix it. Any advice on how to do so?

Have you tried quickpic? I'm not sure it will have your desired results but it is generally better than the stock gallery app.

Have you backed up your files and pictures? I see too many desperate cries for help recovering deleted priceless pictures with no solution.

I see it has Excellent ratings! Thanks - will try it out. First I've heard of it, but what I see so far is quite nice!

First impressions - WOW. It looks like exactly what I wanted

Thanks, Paul! It does *everything* I wanted a gallery app to do (and apparently a whole lot more)! Yes, it has my "desired results", and the fact that I've got huge images straight from my cameras doesn't bother it. It's also quite speedy. I need to look around a lot more. So far, if I were grading it, on a scale of 1 to 10, it would get a 12!
