Definitive Fit Test: Otterbox Commuter and the Extended Battery.

There has been so much banter and discussion on if the Otterbox Commuter fits the GNEX with the Extended Battery. I was fortunate enough to know someone who turned in their GNEX and gave me their Otterbox Commuter case. So I had two. Mine, and one to "hack"!

Lot's of different claims and methods discussed. Here are all of them documented with pictures so now you can judge for yourself which works, which doesn't, which is tolerable, and which is not ... Enjoy.

First off - I took my GNEX (w/Extended battery and cover) and placed a standard VZW gell case on it. I used that to determine where the Extended battery and cover were requiring more room by visually inspecting the distortion... I then used that information to modify the internal rubber sleeve of the donated Otterbox Commuter:

Using all the iterations discussed on the boards here are pictures of the tests done:

Please NOTE: I didn't do an iteration of "Rubber modified, Extended battery w/cover off" because I am not comfortable leaving the hard Otterbox shell in contact with the internal workings of the GNEX.

Hope this helps, and for what it's worth I use the "Rubber modified, Extended battery w/cover on" method daily now.
    Cheers!

Very thorough! Good to see it actually in action and not just speculate

Is there a hollow feeling to the case? The photos look fantastic. The gap bothers me so much but I don't want to undermine the feeling of the case.

It's not noticeable - maybe a little now that you mentioned it but nothing that I noticed. I ended up giving this case to a friend of mine about 2 months ago - he said it never bothered him either. All in the individual perception tho - know what mean.
    Cheers!

    Interesting, nice write up.

May have to grab me one of these since last time I went to the beach, I dropped my phone on the sidewalk. Nice little crack on the top of the screen, VERY difficult to notice, but I know it's there
